KCUMB Happenings

KCUMB SOMA Chapter Volunteer Events:
In October, our chapter joined with the local SAAO chapter to host 40 high school boys at our campus for Science Pioneers program. SOMA members showed these young adults what it is like to be an osteopathic medical student by assisting in OMM demonstrations, hosting suture labs, giving tours, and talking about the importance of education.

In November, a group of volunteers went to the Ronald McDonald House to prepare a meal for patients’ families. We made a delicious meal and were happy to receive many compliments on our meal. This was a new event for us this year, and we had such a great time that we plan on returning next semester and eventually make it into a monthly event!
OMED:
KCUMB brought 11 MSIIs to OMED to participate in the research fair. This was a great way to show some traditionally inactive members all conferences have to offer! They enjoyed networking with fellow students, interacting with our school administration, and attending SOMA social outings. One student, Alyssa Imperatore, received a second place prize – congratulations!

Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine Happenings

Cancer Awareness:

CCOM SOMA brought in the Chicago Metropolitan Breast Cancer Task force to talk about the treatment disparities between African American Women, and Caucasian Women in the Chicagoland area. CCOM SOMA had learned many aspects of Breast Cancer, one which being that there is a lot of money allocated to the Breast Cancer Awareness, but not very much aimed towards the research for treatment.

Euthanasia Coffee Talk:

The political actions committee at CCOM SOMA hosted a “Coffee Talk” Where students were able to freely discuss hot topics in the medical/political community. This month, we decided to speak on the topic of euthanasia.

Feed my Starving Children:

Feed my Starving Children is a non-profit organization that packages food to ship to underdeveloped countries in the world. CCOM SOMA brought our first year members in a total of three sessions in the month of October to package food for children in Africa.

Healthy Eating:

SOMA members attended an informational meeting with Dr. Principe where he not only taught the students to cook a nutritious meal, but also how he uses informational sessions to better treat and educate his patients for an overall healthier lifestyle. Different topics were discussed about nutrition in certain foods, and how various methods of preparation could affect the nutritional outcome.

PreSOMA:

The PreSOMA committee at CCOM reached out to the University of Illinois Chicago to speak about what it is like to be an osteopathic student and possibly starting a PreSOMA committee at their school.

Student DO for a Day at ATSU-KCOM

Student DO for a Day

Student Osteopathic Medical Association members at KCOM started a program to give prospective medical students insight into what a day as an OMS is like. The undergraduate student spend the day shadowing a med student through lecture, OMM lab, Ultrasound lab, and Anatomy Lab. They get a tour of the school, and have the opportunity to ask questions.

  • Taking notes during class with student host
  • OMT modalities and techniques
  • Watch anatomy lab dissection
  • Spend an hour with one of our 25 ultrasound machines
  • Informational session with the Admissions Dept
  • Tour of the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine
